Announcing a “Hub” for All Things South Cape!
South Cape Hospitality & Entertainment Association (SCHEA) announces a long-planned project designed to shine the spotlight on the South Cape district. The South Cape Hub will serve as a retail shop, business conference area, and welcome center. Located at 909 SE 47th Terrace, it’s due to open sometime this summer.
“We’ve wanted to do this for a long time,” says SCHEA President Shelly Walton. “We want a place where people can find out about South Cape’s awesome offerings and shop for local homegrown souvenirs.”
When a location became available in early March, SCHEA’s plan started to gain momentum. Soon after hiring someone to help plan and run the shop, though, the coronavirus prevented everyone from working closely together. SCHEA Board Member and Zak’s Jewelry owner Alison Polo was concerned the closure of non-essential businesses would stop everything.
“I was worried at first,” Polo says. “But we quickly got the hang of planning things as a group virtually.” Polo took to Pinterest to collect ideas, while the team used virtual tools like FaceTime and Zoom to hold group meetings.
“We picked paint colors and decor via text messaging,” Polo laughs. “Which isn’t easy when you can’t see everyone’s expressions.”
The Hub will do a soft opening as soon as it’s able. The spot will also be a check-in location for SCHEA’s trolley events, as well as an information center for visitors and out-of-town travelers.
“We want to be something for everyone,” says Walton. If you live here, you’ll find local gifts and learn about businesses you might not know about. If you’re visiting, you’ll find out where to shop, eat, play, and stay.”
